Guest Lecture at the Department of Foreign Languages

On April 16, 2026, the Department of Foreign Languages hosted a guest lecture delivered by Maryna BILOTSERKOVETS, PhD in Pedagogy, Associate Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages of Sumy National Agrarian University.

The lecture, entitled “Overcoming Barriers in Intercultural Communication: A Thematic Study of Agricultural Idioms in English, Ukrainian, and Chinese,” is highly relevant in the context of contemporary socio-cultural transformations.

In the period of post-war recovery, the ability to operate with specialized vocabulary across various sectors of the economy has become particularly significant, highlighting the need to enhance both linguistic and intercultural competencies.

The topic attracted students from various academic programmes, including Ukrainian Language and Literature, English Philology, and International Relations, as it fostered an interdisciplinary understanding of language phenomena within the framework of global communication.

During the lecture, the speaker provided an in-depth insight into cross-cultural communication, illustrating the functioning of idiomatic expressions in different languages, their semantic nuances, and culturally determined interpretations. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of English as a lingua franca – a universal medium for intercultural dialogue.

As noted by Svitlana Matsenko, a Master’s student in Ukrainian Language and Literature: “At the end of the lecture, I once again became convinced that language is not merely a means of communication, but also a reflection of a nation’s history, values, and way of thinking.”

The positive feedback from students serves as clear evidence of the high academic and methodological quality of the lecture, as well as the professionalism of the invited speaker.
