The recent online event, "Language Voyage: Navigating the World of English," hosted by students of group 331.1 (group supervisor – Asst. Prof. Viktoriia Kozlova) for Sumy Regional Academic Lyceum named after Dmitry Evdokimov on April 30th, was a journey filled with linguistic challenges and insightful discoveries.
As we embarked on this voyage, students introduced activities that tested language proficiency and reasoning skills. While there were initial concerns about its success, we were pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm and articulate responses from high school students.
Vlada Homolia: "How, Why, and What Words Get into Dictionaries"
I have prepared an activity to shed light on the sophisticated process behind the creation of dictionaries. The first part of the assignment involves watching an interview, in which a dictionary writer elaborates on the criteria she uses to determine whether a word or phrase belongs in a dictionary. The second part is practical: one has to apply the same criteria to decide if offered lexemes should be included in a dictionary.
Maria Pedko and Veronika Kolomiiets: "Explored America: Mindful Moments"
In this activity, children worked with phrases related to the word "mind" to expand their vocabulary and develop their ability to use these expressions in various contexts. They also utilized their cognitive abilities to solve tasks associated with video materials and exercises.
Anastasia Vashchenko and Tatiana Molgamova: Warming-up "Traveling to USA"
The task was to engage the children in active work by answering various questions related to American cuisine, films, and culture. The questions were everyday and easy so that the children could more easily immerse themselves in the foreign language atmosphere and start communicating more quickly.
Taisiia Shapoval, Anna Samonenko, and Vlad Grudiy: "How English Became Earth’s Voice"
In the first part of the assignment, students watched a presentation crafted by Artificial Intelligence, uncovering the evolution of the English language as the global voice. It explores pivotal moments that contributed to English becoming the "Voice of the Earth." The second part of the task involves engaging in a quiz by “Baamboozle,” testing their knowledge of English as a global language.
As future teachers, we have observed the profound impact of conducting lessons in English. Students are highly engaged and motivated as they apply language skills in real-world contexts. This exposure not only enhances their proficiency but also equips them for an interconnected global society.
We are sincerely grateful to Victoria Victorivna Kozlova for such an opportunity! The teacher was always in touch, held consultations, corrected our mistakes, and guided us!
