TESOL Online Convention 2025 on the virtual platform of Sumy State Pedagogical University named after A.S. Makarenko

On May 22, 2025 our department of English Philology and Linguodidactics co-hosted the TESOL-Ukraine ONLINE Convention 2025.

Our university was to start the chain of presentations dedicated to teaching English.

At the beginning, Maryna Tsehelska, Vice President of TESOL Ukraine, gave a welcoming speech.

Following that we had three extremely experienced speakers.

The opening speaker of the Convention was Dr. Andy Curtis. From 2015 to 2016, Dr. Andy Curtis served as the 50th President of the TESOL International Association, and in 2016, he received one of the Association’s 50-at-50 Awards, when he was voted one of the fifty most influential figures in the field, over the first 50 years of the Association.

Dr. Curtis spoke on the topic “Teaching with Hope and Strength in Hard Times”. It was a great honor for the audience to listen to such a famous speaker!

Our second presenter was Shannon Roach. Shannon Roach is an experienced global educator and teacher trainer. Beyond the classroom, she engages in mentoring and training instructors and pre-service teachers, supports study abroad programs, and collaborates in the development of content, curriculum, and courses that support instructors and English learners across disciplines.

Shannon Roach presented the topic “Teaching with Heart: A Mindfulness Workshop for Language Educators”. Participants admitted, that it was such a comforting and relaxing atmosphere during her speech.

The third speaker was Kubra Salmanova. Kubra Salmanova is an award-winning English language educator, project manager, and community leader from Azerbaijan. She teaches at Azerbaijan Technical University and is the founder of English Zone Baku, where she integrates media literacy, environmental awareness, and learner autonomy into English instruction.

Kubra Salmanova’s presentation topic was “Developing Learners' Autonomy”. The participants noted that the presentation was extremely informative.

This event gathered educators, researchers and language professionals not only from Ukraine, but all over the world!

We are so proud and happy to be one of the co-hosts of such a wonderful event!
